La Posada at Green Valley is now a Bicycle Friendly Business.
In May at Posada Java, our resident cycling club, the Posada Pedalers, celebrated a milestone with La Posada staff. La Posada achieved Gold level recognition from The League of American Bicyclists as an official bicycle friendly business.
Also, La Posada at Green Valley is the ONLY continuing care retirement community recognized as a bicycle friendly business in the United States.
To become an official bicycle friendly business, the La Posada campus had to demonstrate it is a safe, convenient place for cyclists to ride, encourages ridership among residents and employees, offers safe riding lanes, and promotes cycling education and safety programs to La Posada residents.
Before this bike-friendly business recognition, La Posada was already at the forefront of becoming a bike-friendly community by offering free campus tricycles to residents and staff and education classes on how to operate these bicycles safely, including equipping residents with safety helmets. Within the Green Valley – Sahuarita community, Posada Java is an active bike-friendly hub for cyclists beginning and ending popular rides throughout Southern Arizona and an aid station during the El Tour de Tucson bicycle race.
In Spring 2022, La Posada residents created the Posada Pedalers cycling group, which conducts rides twice a month on the campus and rides throughout the Green Valley – Sahuarita community. Also, in June 2022, they requested a free bicycle repair station to be built behind Posada Java so cyclists touring through the Sonoran desert had a place to rest and fix their bicycles if needed.
Since 1880, The League of American Cyclists has existed to support and encourage cycling and build bike-friendly communities. The League represents cyclists through ridership education, stewardship, safety initiatives, and corporate outreach. Presently, 1547 businesses have earned bicycle-friendly business recognition in the United States.
Congratulations to La Posada resident and cyclist Tom Wilsted and La Posada Living Well Director Kimberly Murphy on their hard work filling out the application and bringing this unique national recognition to the La Posada campus.
